It’s Not Enough For People To Like Your Business

I recently talked about 5 reasons why facebook isn’t working for you if you're using Facebook for business. All of those reasons were entirely within your control to affect. This is one reason that was just brought to my attention. It’s one of those items that fit under the category “what you don’t know can hurt you.”


Facebook has changed

the way it serves up a person’s Facebook news feed. What a person sees is now based on your page’s edgerank, and their individual interaction with your page. Edgerank is simply Facebook’s name for the algorithm that measures overall interaction with your page.


That’s all well and good until you realize that people must interact with your page for it to come up in their feed. Just liking your page is no longer good enough. They may see one or two posts at most after they like your page and those get quickly buried in their feed. How much they see after they like and don’t interact is determined by your edgerank. I wondered why it seemed there was little response to my posts. I don’t have a business but I can see how that would hurt a business that worked hard to build up a fan base.

Even though Facebook has been around a while, I am still not too keen on this whole social media stuff. Why would I send somebody to FB where they make a ton of money from the ads, when I can have the same posts on my blog – and make some money with my own ads!
Perhaps, I still need to do some more research on the benefits, but I will take my time.

You’re not necessarily sending people to social media, but rather attracting them from social media to your site. Social media is where the people are gathering. It doesn’t matter if it’s facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc.

That is where they are. So you post teasers on social media that link back to your site, where you want them to be. You do indeed use the same posts as on your website, just not the full post. You need to give them a reason to go to your site.

Once there, you need to give them a compelling reason to become a subscriber, opt-in for an offer, or at the very least, watch that social media channel for your posts until you have built enough know, like, and trust with them to take action that gets them into your system.

Hi Rob,

I think what Facebook is really doing is trying to get us to “boost” posts and spend money to promote our content on their platform.

I don’t find it an ethical approach as they are pretending to solve all marketing answers but what they are really doing is trying to create a massive global data base that will sooner or later try to use/abuse.
